Question Tools to jin with

I was just wondering if anyone has used regular toolbox pliers or other handy tools around the house to jin with other than jin pliers. Are jin pliers the only tool to use here? If so why?

Regular pliars work great, a bunch of us in our club seem to use the jin pliars more for wiring. But knives chisles, and torches are good too.

I see no reason why you couldn't use regular pliars to strip the bark and remove larger wood fibres. However, is it possible to use a cigarette lighter rather than a blowtorch to burn off the tiny fibrous bits on the new jin? Perhaps as the flame is cooler it is more likely to scorch/ blacken the jin?

Lets hear your thoughts

well i just started jinning and i use toolbox pliers needlenose pliers, a knife, and a lighter but i only have jins on medium size trees nothing real big but once I do get larger (which i am progressivly doing) trees and my collection gets larger i might get a pair. Maybe not I don’t really know. With the lighter it defiantly isn’t as effective as a blowtorch but I used it for small jins. One problem I had was that the wood didn’t really change color unless I used the tip of the flame. Another thing is that I kept ending up with the jin tips turing into candles and some of the needles strangely enough the whole needle didnt die just maybe a half of it.

Funny but short story:

There is a newer member in our bonsai club that had a nice old bougie in need of some jin and shari work. Completely new type person and real go getter type. One of the club members outlined the area in need of work - I think with a sharpie. She did some work at a Saturday club workshop and then took the plant home to finish it later. She brought it in at our next club meeting to gasps of horror. Apparently she forgot where to stop and removed the bark on the entire plant! An amazing feat, especially when she let us know the tool she used - a potato peeler.

So... a potato peeler?

Fun story, but I think I will stay away from using a potato peeler.
