Tool Dilema
I recently came across the opportunity to buy a set of Masakuni tools from the 1960's. I haven't yet decided whether to buy because i already have a set of functional tools, but this seems like a really good deal (around $50). I guess my main question is about the age- does anyone know about the quality of these tools from 40 years ago? Better? Worse? The kit contains a pair of concave cutters, one set of regular shears, on set of smaller detail shears (i believe some call these "azalea shears" or something), a set of tweezers, and one of those tiny scissor-type wire cutters, all in a zipper case. All are in mint condition. I suppose 5 tools of any quality are worth $10 a piece, but if i already have a few tools should i bother? The ones i have now are sufficiant but not the highest quality. Arg! Wish i could spend money on TREES for once instead of knick-nacks...maybe i will.

Re: Tool Dilema
Just inspect the cutting edges and try a few test cuts. You would be looking for nicks or the dreaded wire bite marks that would indicate that the tools had been misused.
Properly cared for, they would last a long time. Masakuni is still selling some of the original designs from that period. They may require cleaning and sharpening to bring them back to good condition, but you could expect to pay $100 or more for a small Masakuni concave cutter. The edges of the concave cuttersshould not exactly meet; one edge should slightly overlap the other. Sometimes you run across a pair that has been "fixed" and ruined. Regards, Matt

Re: Tool Dilema
And if you do, could I buy your old set for a reasonable price?
