Thoughts on the JR Hasami Shear stainless steel?

I was thinking of getting the Joshua Roth Hasami stainless steel Shears. Anyone out there own these and if so whats your out take on them? I'm looking for something that last a life time

I also saw this nice TOOL HOLSTERS for sale in the UK. Only bad part is it looks to be grossly over priced. I have seen a few on other websites that have similar holsters but none seem to be as nice as there's nor do they have the extra con cave holder. Here is the websight link just scroll down a tad its in the center of the page. http://www.bonsai.co.uk/xmas.htm

Re: Thoughts on the JR Hasami Shear stainless stee

I have the stainless shears and they're nice. The curious thing is all the Joshua Roth tool grades have the same 3 year warranty, at least in the US. If you can afford it, I don't think you would regret the purchase of the stainless steel tools, but don't blow your whole tool budget on one tool. If you drop down a grade you could buy an ashinaga style shear and a thinning shear, too.

The best way to extend the life of your shears is to buy a separate pair to use on the roots, where you may encounter sand and bits of stone. An 8150 novice ohkubo hasami is perfect for roots, and inexpensive, too.

That leather holster is cool - I haven't seen anything quite like it! Does it keep the shear and branch cutter from touching and banging together? If so, I'd like to get one. I can understand the price would be high for a custom item like this, but very convenient

Re: Thoughts on the JR Hasami Shear stainless stee

I'm not really worried so much about the JR Stainless braking so much as I am to them maybe using a Stainless that rust. I have had this problem in the past before where I payed top dollar for stainless only to find out its some kind of cheap stainless that rusted on me. I'm not some scientific metal expert but just would like to know if im getting the real deal, for what im paying.
As for a 3yr warranty I dont think I have had a garden tool brake on me yet even from china when im cutting on wood I know is to thick for the blades
Now, the holster on that site looks to be the only one that holds the shears and cutters seperat. If you click on the picture there is a blow up and you can see the little leather divider. have seen other sites that have a leather holster for just the shears. That ran about $17 and looked to be of the same quality. I just like the fact that, that one held your 2 most used tools right at your side. Again only bad part is when you convert the cost of it your looking at $35+shipping.

If it is true stainless steel it won't rust. You may have gotten hold of the type that are plated with a shiny substance [mainly for looks]. Once the top layer wears it will rust like regular steel.

Re: Thoughts on the JR Hasami Shear stainless stee

One guy at Midori had some ordinary tools polished and galvanized. They looked pretty cool, but the big question was going to be how long it held up. Unfortunately he dropped and broke the branch cutters, which spoiled the experiment!

The JR Master Line is definitely solid stainless. As Tony says, some manufacturers have plated tools. I've also seen some advertised as "Silvery finish" with platings of chrome or nickel alloy that could potentially flake or wear through if the tool sees a lot of use. The JR warranty is pretty liberal, but even so, I've had only one return in the past few years.

Regards,

Matt
