Kiku cutters too small?
Well, I'm a little frustrated with my 8" Kiku concave cutters. The handles are just too small for my hands. Its not the length of the handles, its the diameter of each side... They get lost in my hand...lol...aaarrrggggh.
I'm willing to bet that most Japanese tools are made for the native population. One thing I know for sure is that the avg. size over there is no where near 6'2". Since this tool was quite expensive (to me) and does it's job very well; I have made a few modifications for the sake of experimentation. I decided to do a little knot work on the handles to beef them up. Nothing fancy, just a couple of half-hitches and some square knot work that anyone is capable of. Hopefully, one of these solutions will fix my frustration with using them. If any of you bigger guys (or gals) have any other suggestions, I'm all ears. Anyway, here is the outcome... |

Thanks Joanie. No, I wasn't a squid... Big Blue all the way. I actually got a book on knots at the library yesterday... I had to do something.

There are liquid plastic coatings that can be applied to tool handles. They will modestly enlarge the diameter, but improve the grip. Some claim that more than one application is possible. Here's an example product.

Thank you for the suggestion John. Its $5.25 a can and it comes in a bunch of cool colors. I will do some more research to see if this is a better solution. Meanwhile the knots are doing the job, if/when they fail this may be an option.
Thanks again. |

I have not personally used this or similar products, but others have mentioned they work well.
I know Joshua Roth sells a 10 1/2 inch concave cutter, with a slightly larger blade edge of 1 1/8th inch. Good luck!
