Hand Carving Set? Recommendations?

Searched the forums and haven't seen much discussion on hand carving tools/gouges etc. (many on power tools).

Mom's asking me about Xmas and realized a few hand carving tools I could use. I've not hand carved before, already have a fine Li Dremel (would like some of Dale's bits though.

Anyone have a hand carving set they can recommend? Anyone see one at Lee Valley pertinent?

Is this 6 piece flexcut set 1/2 down this page suggested? My trees are small to medium at present.

Many thanks.

Happy....that flex cut set works well, I have one. However search the net. You can get a set for 60 to 70 dollars. Thats half of what stone lantern wants. For the prices they charge they should sell money trees for bonsai stock.

You could try www.bonsaideals.com for carving tools. Its Colin Lewis's site he has some nice draw tools. A tad on the expensive side, but in stock last I talked to him.

Tom beat me to my recommendations! I recently purchased one of the draw gouges from www.bonsaideals.com and I love it. It does something that the flex type push carvers do not do very well.

I'm not sure you need the entire set of the flex type tools, although the set is a nice thing to have.

I use an assortment of regular wood bench type chisels and some specific ones made for shoji screen building. The shoji ones came from www.japanwoodworker.com and they also have a set of 6 laminated carving tools for like $20 - check it out.

Best of luck shopping!

It just dawned on me. Graham Potters site www.kaizenbonsai.com has some killer wood working supplies. This guy is exceptional when it comes to working dead wood. I took a class with him up in Boston in early spring and he was incredible. He had some of his wood working products with him to demo and they were all top notch. Also very reasonable in price...a rare thing these days.

Happy,
The majority of all power wood carving tools for bonsai are available right here in the good 'ol USA!
A piece of advice, don't go too hog wild buying hand carving tools. You'll find you won't use too many and won't use them for long once you discover power carving.
There are a couple hand tools that are a MUST however, they are the PULL-type gravers or jin blades, and, I've found the best of these are the right angled ones by Flex-cut and one of the imported scoop-like concave pull gravers from Japan. After those two are purchased, I'd look at power carving tools.
Don't get into hand carving tools that require too much hard pushing or hammering with a mallet. You'll be sorry you spent the money after you bang up and loosen the roots on a bunch of trees.
Just my opinion after many years of carving.
Dale
