I know from experience that the tool sets of 20 pieces or more that cost $40.00 are the lowest quality sets you can purchase. We have had the opportunity to import Chinese tools for $1.50/piece to sell at our store and have not done so because of the low quality. Yes Chinese tools are of less quality than Japanese tools, but a set of 20+ tools sold for a retail price of $40.00 is ridiculous.

We sell bonsai supplies and tools and would never order from these mass production plants in China that sell wholesale to the US for $1.50 per tool. These products are made from a low carbon content steel because in order to mass produce such tools they need to be forged or stamped. High carbon steel cannot be made into tools using this method because the steel is to rigid.

This is a warning to those who think they will get a deal on a huge tool set for $40.00. These tools will rust badly and fall apart. They are not made from "quality carbon steel" because all steel is carbon based. If you want a reasonably priced quality Chinese tool set look for one that guarantees that the tools are made from "high carbon content steel". This means they have to be hand worked and are not pressed or forged.

We import our tool sets directly from China just like everybody else. The difference is that we get ours from a family of tool makers that have been making these tools for 100's of years. They use high carbon steel and hand work each piece. We don't add brushes, tweezers and a couple feet of wire to make a huge tool set. The sets we offer contain a knob cutter, concave cutter, satsuki shear and two large handled Ashinaga style shears. We sell this 5-piece tool set for $54.99 and it really will last for many years. We don't need to ship them in a tablespoon of 3-in-1 oil because they don't rust in 5 hrs exposure to the air.

I know this seems like a rant but these companies take advantage of people that are new to the hobby and this frustrates myself and everyone that works for me.
