Don't try this at home!

I hope this photo was staged for the camera.

http://www.main.org/bonsai/2002/images/bonsai2.jpg

This shows a noted bonsai artist involved in a driftwood carving activity.

Note the high speed grinding tool
Note the lack of any eye protection
Note the position of the hands in the cutting path

Makes me shiver.

I don't care how careful he is, that's a bad idea, and sets a bad example for others.

He'll be more careful after he gets the eye-patch

If you have any of the Kimura articles or books you've probably seen him in similar poses, but I really pity the poor assistant who is holding the tree by the base while Mr K runs the jigsaw down its trunk.

Not many tools are indispensible, but the dremel is great for fine work on deadwood. If mine broke today, I'd buy another tomorrow.

While a Dremel is handy it is not indispensable... there's still nothing like the effect of handtools. I.e., pliers, chisels, knives...

As I continue to grow as an "artist" I find myself returning to the use of the hand tools for refinement work.

Heavily sculptured pieces ala Dremel and Makita are fine initially but after a few years they really do end up looking like organic fertilizer...

My carving arsenal includes both of the above with about a dozen different bits and carving tools, as well as chisels, utility knives, ice picks, screwdrivers, broken glass, sand paper and a blow torch. If I need a chainsaw I borrow one...

The truly indispensable tool seems to be my brain- if the carving doesn't look natural to my mind, it is usually going to get more hokey with time...
