Re: cut paste

The traditional Japanese cut paste (the jar actually reads, "Cutto Pasuta&quot usually drops off on its own as the wound heals, or it dries out enough in a year or two to warrant replacement with fresh paste.

Re: cut paste

TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies has three types of cut paste

1) Callusmate is a wound dressing for general purpose use. _Comes in a large, toothpaste size tube for direct application

2) Masakuni tree sealant, which is more liquid in texture, comes with a small applicator tip and is designed for use on small wounds and thin barked trees, as well as broken branches

3) Shin-kiyonal, which is a paste that works well for grafting. _It remains more pliable than other sealants, but it is not designed for aesthetics! _Looks waxy in appearance.

The image above for the Cutto Pasuto product comes from one of many distributurs, Bonsai of Brooklyn, www.bonsaiofbrooklyn.com, but there are other sources online. _ I have not ordered from B.o.B. before so I can't comment further on that, but the product works very well, especially on pines and juniper.

As far as making your own is concerned, you could use a latex based pruning sealant from your garden center or some folks even use white glue on small cracks. _It does run in the rain, though. _I prefer the bonsai products because I believe they work better and the color is aesthetically pleasing.

There used to be some latex stuff called &quotoc Farwell's Tree Seal" that came in a nice big jar, but I guess the product was discontinued. _It was a nice color for bougainvillea and wisteria, but it was very difficult to remove. _Not a problem for those two trees because they are so slow healing anyway. _ _It was good on maples in the yard, too. _I haven't been able to find it. _Only dead links.

Matt

Re: cut paste

I use Plastacina. You can buy this modelling clay at any art or craft store. It works simlar to cutto pasto but you can buy it in colors and mix in various shades to match trunk colors.
It is must less ugly thata way.

Re: cut paste

I tried something similar on a hornbeam. Looked great for about 3 months and then it got dry and sticky and kind of hard to remove. Have you been able to get the plasticina off?

Re: cut paste

El cheapo checking in here. I use latex glue. Usually just where the bark meets the cambium, so it doesn't dry out and separate. It wears of off with time and by then the scar tissue is healing over.

Re: cut paste

Hey El Cheapo, How about well chewed tobbacco. Would keep the bugs off too, pleasing bark like texture to boot!

Re: cut paste

Hi all....I believe I read about the following here on the list. Do not remember who the credit belongs to but...i have tried some "non hardening auto liquid gasket" from my Napa dealer. I placed some on a couple of collected trees last week. Will let you all know how it works.

Re: cut paste

That was from YOURS TRULY. I use that on fresh cuts on maples and the like. For cut paste I use the paneling putty from min-wax. It comes in a bunch of colors for every shade of bark. I float a little olive oil on it and it keeps a long time in my bonsai bag. It come in a nice screw jar too. When you take it out at the next club meeting, everyone will want to tell you " Why didn't I think of that". Only about $2.50 a jar. How's that El Guapo...er, I mean El Cheapo!
