Colored wire & New Wave Bonsai

I could not believe it. While scanning everyones favorite shopping place I came across this item for sale. This "stuff" is being pawned off as "bonsai wire." Why would anyone want to buy wire that would stick out like a sore thumb on your tree? I do everything I can to try to conceal the fact the I have my tree in wire. This guy thinks we want to draw attention to it by putting on this shiny vividly colored "lipstick."

brightly coloured wire is a great idea... this way, there would be less chance of missing it and not taking it off in time. Saves scars on your branches...

Cheers

Yes, where did you find this stuff at? Maybe we'll find some bonsai that glow in the dark, too!

Re: What in the world is this guy thinking

Al, I can not agree more!

I admit to also 'looking around' on Ebay, I have even been known to bid on a book, pot, magazine or supply. I saw this wire and thought it to be a joke! Sure its colorful....sure its pretty... but NOT ON MY TREES! I am not close to an expert. My trees are beautiful to me, but they too are far from 'expert' quality. Why would I want to make the wire the main point of my tree? We try and get a pot that fits the tree, neither takeing away from the tree or being the focal point.... this guy thinks the wire should be?

Ebay can be enjoyable, it can be the source of some good deals.... IT SHOULD NEVER BE THE PLACE WE GO TO SEE WHAT IS THE RULE OF BONSAI. Most of the trees on Ebay are overpriced and very poor specimens....with little hope of ever being a good tree, there are a few trees worth a look, but they stick out like a sore thumb and are bid to an unreal price. Basically speaking.... the old saying goes "You get what you pay for".

Re: What in the world is this guy thinking

Whoa Jay...chill noone said you had to use the wire, and im pretty sure ebay is not where we go to see fine bonsai ...

I have seen bonsai (in the training stage) tied with twine, held into shape with iron bars, with duct tape, with glue and wound healer in every possible colour. Wire is for training too, not for finished bonsai..as i understand and correct me if i am wrong but a bonsai is not usually displayed at a show with wire. whats the harm in using wire you can easily see. It would make you take more notice of when it starts to bite in and Im sure you wouldnt leave a bit on by mistake.

If it helps me make my trees into better bonsai...im all for it no matter what the colour is..but you know what, now i really want some pink polka dot wire (thanks tony )

Im not saying wire your show quality trees in it, but for training I think its a pretty good idea...

cheers

Oh Jules!!!

I won't agree with you now... I don't like to have coloured things on my trees, besides blooms well, but it depends on everyone, as you see, some of us don't like them, some of you do like them... well, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I can't miss the copper wire on the trees, maybe because I have only a few, maybe if you have a huge collection, and don't remember well all of your trees, it could be helpfull, but I still DON'T like it...

Re: What in the world is this guy thinking

Jules, sorry to disagree, but that makes for interesting conversation. First, I do believe trees are shown with wire. It is not a fault but understood to be part of the ongoing process.

Second, just because you see a wire does not mean you will know when to remove it! If you keep alert you will see wire no matter what shade or color it is.

Third, I think it is very important to at least start off on the right foot. Do things the correct way and learn why it is correct. Growing with the knowledge you aquire.

Fourth, yes some individuals do use twine, coat hangers, rubberbands etc etc to aid in the training of the tree. We should not condemn them for it... just point out there is another method that is time tested and proven to work...one that is more pleasing to the eye.

Fifth, If we are going to accept colored wire.....why not paint the tree for better viewing? Why not keep all the Bar Branches and let the leaves grow larger rather than small? Why not hang two ropes and a little board as a swing?

We are trying to bring nature to a pot.... nature as natural looking as we can.... colored wire is just one of the things that should at least be shown as being incorrect so that the newcomers down the road at least know what is right.

OH BOY>>>>>> do I rant or what.....just my .02 cents
