I have found that a light cleaning oil (Sold as CR-66, or WD40 in the states) works well.
There are grit cleaning pads that do very good work as well. Last edited by Bart Thomas : 3-Mar-2004 at 11:24 AM. |

White spirit, followed by WD40 works for me. Tools that i don't use frequently are spryed with a light coating of WD40 then wrapped in a cloth.

Actually wire wool (we call it steel wool) is useful. Just keep away from the edges.
I don't think white spirit is turpentine. I think it's more like what we call mineral spirits |

I think Mineral Spirit is what you call White Spirit it in the US. It's a substitute for turpentine and used as paint thinner and for cleaning oil based paint off paint brushes.
BTW Graeme, I use OO grade wire wool (the stuff you use to apply wax finishes to wood) with the white spirit to remove resin stains from my tools. You can get it quite cheaply at B&Q.
