Hey,

whats best to clean my tools with? they've seemed to have developed some black stains at the tips and i thought it best to clean them now as their rather expensive tools..

I have found that a light cleaning oil (Sold as CR-66, or WD40 in the states) works well.

There are grit cleaning pads that do very good work as well.

I agree. I use WD40 and just a cotton rag to clean my tools. Works great

White spirit, followed by WD40 works for me. Tools that i don't use frequently are spryed with a light coating of WD40 then wrapped in a cloth.

Could you please refresh us yanks on just what "white spirit" is?

Knew once when in the art business but have forgotten the US name for it.

Thanks.

Is white spirit the same as mineral spirits? If so that's called paint thinner in the US.

Actually wire wool (we call it steel wool) is useful. Just keep away from the edges.

I don't think white spirit is turpentine. I think it's more like what we call mineral spirits

I think Mineral Spirit is what you call White Spirit it in the US. It's a substitute for turpentine and used as paint thinner and for cleaning oil based paint off paint brushes.

BTW Graeme, I use OO grade wire wool (the stuff you use to apply wax finishes to wood) with the white spirit to remove resin stains from my tools. You can get it quite cheaply at B&Q.
