Bat Guano

I would like to hear from any bonsai enthusiasts who have used bat guano as a fertilizer for their bonsai, including dosages and frequencies. I write the newsletter for my local bonsai club, and I would like to include comments and/or cautions about bat guano from people who have had both good and bad experiences with it.

Thank you.

Gary

I have seen some different formulations of guano, but I haven't used it myself. I did buy a box once as a gag gift for a friend.

One common guano is by Whitney Farms and it has a high nitrogen formulation: 10-3-1. I wouldn't use it on bonsai, myself. but it would be good for flowers, vegetables and your lawn when you want rapid growth.

There's another I saw that is more of a phosphate blend, called, believe it or not "Virgin of the Desert"

That's 4-13-1. Might be good for root development, and fall fertilizing. Great for bulbs, I expect. That page with an insanely long link says Virgin guano is from cave bats that feed on insects and cactus and that makes it high in phosphorus.

Whitney farms says to use it as a tea, which would probably be the best plan with bonsai.

Regards,

Matt
