Abused concave cutter

I am guilty of abusing my large concave cutter by merciless trying to do a job for which a saw was probably indicated. I am left with badly misaligned blades which are sharp but do not perform the desired cut. Is there a way to fix this?

What kind are they? I had some cheap ones that did that after a few months. I put them between to pieces of wood and hit gently with a hammer (if there is such a thing) until I got them pretty close to normal. I bought a better quality pair though to replace them.

That might be part of the problem. These are Fujiyama from Dallas Bonsai. Got them on sale for about $45.

I'm not sure if I understand how you did it. Where do the two pieces of wood go and where do I gently tap with the hammer? Thanks in advance!

Hope this explains it. I'm not a BlackSmith but I did stay at a Red Roof in last night.

Concave cutter tool maintenance

The best way to align the blades is to slowly file down the stop to allow the blades to come together. Go very slowly because if you remove too much the tool won't work properly and once the stop is gone the tool is no good any longer. This is needed when the tool has been sharpened so much that the blades don't meet as well as the problem to have. If you have used the hammer and they don't fit quite right file the stop until they do. Attached is a modification of tree bender's diagram showing the stop to work on.

Thank you Jgs. My problem is that the blades have a significant gap in between them. I'm affraid that grinding the stop will not change this gap. I'm sorry I don't have a picture to explain it better.

Contact Tom from Shady Side Bonsai. He offers sharpening services and I am certain he could give you some great advice (not saying that the other advice is not good, just that he may do this type fixing often). Tachigi is his screen name here at bonsaiTalk.
