Varnish on a stone?
Hi guys, I was just looking at some suiseki on ebay and noticed that a few of them said they were varnished. Do they mean oiled or do people actually varnish the stones?

Re: Varnish on a stone?
I've seen some of the carved stones that are sold with certain imported bonsai plantings have a varnish of some type on them.
It's done to bring out the color and luster of dull stones, the way you might varnish a seashell to bring back the patina. It might make a dull or soft stone appear to be harder (as if it could take a smooth polish) It doesn't last a long time and I don't think any true collectors would do this to a stone. Some don't even like to use mineral oil. Just a bit of elbow grease and a long time outside in the elements. Regards, Matt

Re: Varnish on a stone?
I've noticed that at the conventions, the Chinese vendors will have a lot of biseki (pretty stone) which have been altered either by grinding or cutting. These type of stones usaully have a varnish on them to bring out the details. I stay away from these type stones. Thats just me. I have seen some real unique stones though.
Best regards, Bonsaial

Re: Varnish on a stone?
I heard from a knowledgeable collector once that in the past, Japanese Suiseki were rubbed with the oil wiped from the side of the nose. This would give them a nice shean over time, and i suppose add to the personal connection between stone and "stoner".

My nose is not so big. It would take 75 years of rubbing to get a patina with nose oil and by this time I would have rubbed my nose off.
Has anyone tried rubbing with small amounts of pure lanolin? Cheers, Jim |
