You should start buy picking up a copy of "The Japanese Art of Stone Aprreciation, suiseki and its use with bonsai". It is one of the most informative books that I have read on suiseki.

What you must ask yourself when you look at this stone is, "What does this stone represent to me?" It cannot be a mountain because a mountain is darker in color and has a lower angle of rise from the sides to the apex of the stone. It is clearly not a hut stone, bridge stone, waterfall stone, or boat stone. This does not appear to be a coastal rock stone or waterpool stone. From there, you can go on to think of an object that it portrays. Do you see an animal, face, or figure in this stone.

To me, it represents a galcier in the frigid arctic waters. If you do not agree, you may find something closer that it represents.

If you can not find anything else for the stone to represent, this means that it will fall under the catagory of abstract stones, which are appreciated for their beauty, texture, patina, etc.

I must say, you have started off with a much better stone that my first. I still do not know why I keep my first stone. I guess it has a sentimental value to it.

G'day dbz12fan,

Thank you for your reply, I shall bear the book in mind.

I take delivery of the stone on the 17th of this month, so, so far all I have seen of it up till now is the photo above. Much of my life I was involved with that of stone sculptures, the glacier naming is attractive to me, I had opted for, I suppose what one might say is abstract, the name: "Dragon's Molar", what do you think about that?

Now I must wait to see if it comes complete with its own name.

The source from where I am getting it, is a very reliable bloke I affectionately call my Bonsai Guru, he supplies me with small yamadori starters, as well as begun trees [including some imports] and many handmade [unique] pots.

This is what I saw when I first looked at this stone. Maybe you can call it a "Rodin" stone.

Good luck.
