First Collected Stone

Hi Folks,

Not that much going on in the Hard Rock Cafe these days...

Here's a stone I collected during a trip to the mountains last summer.

Any comments?

Peace

-Cody

Looks interestring. I am pretty good with trees, but you have to post more than one view of a stone, I think. It's a solid, so it's really difficult to judge depth.

Regards,

Matt

Little bit of an update here. I know very little about display using a suiban, but I thought I's give it a go.

Here's another collected about the same time. This is my first attempt at diaza carving, and I'm kind of disappointed I wimped out and didn't try to carve any feet. The stone is uncut, but broken to make a pretty flat bottom...

The cliff stone in the sand is pretty nice as displayed. I would think about getting a nice Suiseki suiban for display though. This tray is much too heavy for this stone. The width looks fairly good but the heavy, tall walls spoil the view. The stone seems dwrfed in the tray with the walls nearly as tall as the stone.

As for the daiza, if this a first try, you are well on your way. You can still carve feet in this base with the cut-away- style. Just use a dremel tool at a very sharp angle, and cut away about an 1/8" of wood from the bottom, back at an angle towards the center of the base. Don't cut away any wood where you want the feet. When the base is setting on the table, the cut away portion will be in shadow and seem to be removed entirely, yet back about a 1/4" from the bottom edge is where it will contact the table again. I hope this makes sense.

I have a couple like this, I will try to edit this with a picture.

Nice going, Bonsai-al

(edit) here is the bottom of the stand showing the way I carved it back. It helps if the whole daiza is carved rather convex around the entire side of the daiza.

The next picture shows the stand right side up and the look of the stand on the table. Hard to tell there are not actually feet carved. Good luck, Al

Thanks for the advice Al.

I think I will add some feet to the existing dai. If I muck it up I can always start again from scratch, besides, its good practice.

I'm also keeping my eyes open for a more delicate suiban for the cliff.

Thanks again,

Cody
