Finished Daiza
This is the first daiza that I have ever finished. The leg placement is not very good, but I am happy with the results.
The stone is from David Sampson.

That is a sweet stone. The dai is shaped good and the legs are a little small or hardly noticible which to some is OK. I think you just need to spend more time sanding. Start with 80grit for rough sanding switching to 100. Finish off with 220 and work on down to 400. Mist with water and let dry. then final sand with 400. The water mist will raise the fibres a little letting you get a "really close shave".
At that point the stain will go on much more even. Looks great, good luck, Bonsai-al

The legs are actually quite noticeable, but from the upper angle of the photo, it does not appear so.
I tried to do as much sanding as I could, but I think I could have done a bit better. Thanks for the tip on wetting the wood.

that came out quite nice, I am starting my first dai however, i am still contemplating what type of wood will compliment my stone and I need to find a place to cut the bottom of the rock flat for me.
Nice job How do you pronounce the word "daiza" ? |

Jow,
The dark hardwoods are very nice- walnut oh yeah, nice. Ive seen ones made of pine though that were finished to appear like a fine hardwood. Depends on your skill!!! Go to a hardwood lumber supplier and look through their short pieces. Good luck!

Yea, that is what I plan on doing, however, I have to rank my skill at 0. Since this will be my first, but it is a small stone so I can afford to mess up a couple times without spending too much on wood. It will be a mame or shohin viewing stone which I don't know if that exists but it is sentimental to me because I picked it up off of a glacier in New Zealand 2 years ago. And if i want to go get another one it will be another 24 hours by plane, which isn't fun.
