Carving dai?

Is there a standard procedure for carving dai? Here seems to be a case for cutting the bottom of the stone flat.
Does one use a router, or just hand tools? Shane

Re: Carving dai?

I like the stone flat so that I can use a router and power tools. Just because you use power tools does not take anything away from the finished product. Do you really care if it is hand carved or made with power tools. In the end nobody asks that question anyway.
I am in the process of carving a new dai that is for a stone that I purchased at the convention. I am making the dai out of boccote. It is a wood from South America. It is tiger striped light and dark bands of brown and is fairly hard. I will take photos as I go along and will post them at a later date.

Re: Carving dai?

A guy, who I work with, suggested to make a cast of the bottom of the stone and set up a duplicator using a router to carve the stone out. Sounds like a good idea.

Re: Carving dai?

I saw an article somewhere on making mock dais in bondo as aids for carving.

At GSBF1999 one of the vendors had a pantograph contraption with that took a router on one end and had a stylus on the other. I imagine it could be used to rough in a dai, which must be 90% of the work

Regards,

Matt
