Bought this "feather stone" today
I was able to go to my local nursery today. I've been interested in landscapes lately and saw that they had some rocks at the nursery. I picked this one up for $5. Its probably around 12 inches long. They called it a "feather stone" or "feather rock." Its pretty easy to shape and it light-weight (hence feather.) I might get some mame kingvilles or spruces and see what I can do with it. Should be cool.

Hi
That feather rock is E.Z. to carve and you can work it with a carbide drill or ax to get a pocket for planting the tree, and use the ax or a welders chipping hammer to do any shapeing that you may care to. It is an enjoyable project. Have fun Paul |

Hi BGH,
I have some feather rocks myself, cool stuff.Remember to wear a dust mask if you use any grinders, seems like there is some powdered glass in it to me. By chance does your nursery place ship?I have had the same two feather rocks for like 7 years and still haven't found any place to buy the stuff.

Yeah, what Redpine said...and wear gloves too. That stuff always shreds my hands. Fun to work with though.

I quit using grinders , axes etc. to carve featherstone. I found an easier way. For me at least. I crank up the old pressure washer. Set the highest pressure on it (2200 psi). Then I use the wand like a pencil. It placer mines the stone almost like it was butter.
A little messy. Water goes all over the place but then that is what they make wet weather gear for ;o) Takes a while to get used to it but not a real hard thing to learn. Just takes a bit of practice. |
