Let's see...
1. Its gonna rot 2. You need to seal it III. Its too shallow D. Needs sheetmetal interior 5. Mica pots are better 6. you made it too pretty 7. It needs holes on the sides Now you know why I am not too excited about writing a stand article! oh and BTW, your going to hate that lip protruding in when you need to get the plant out Your partner in wood, Al edit: I forgot to tell you how beautiful it is. Job well done!

On a somewhat nicer note. That is one of the better grow pots I have seen in many years. Could be that someone that puts that much effort into a grow pot might just be able to put the same amount of effort into the tree that will be growing in it. That could lead to some great things. A shallow grow pot like that is just about perfect to grow trees out for a forest planting. All in all a very good job. The only suggestion I would have is to make it out of a more durable material. Something like cedar or red wood would be an excellent choice. Pressure treated wood would also work. Many think that the pressure treated wood might be bad for the tree. I have never found this to be true. Due to its resistance to insects it isn't a bad choice. Mind you there is nothing wrong with mica grow pots. I kinda like 'em ;o) Most of the time they look a lot better ( and do a better job) than the crap most people slap together and use as a grow pot. Any way Pats on the Back for what you got. Ya done good |

Spar Varnish might slightly help prevent rot...but you will have better luck with 2 part epoxy. You can find it at the home store. You could even line the inside with fiberglass mat, that would really extend the life. If you did this you would have a fiberglass insert that you could just "plop" into your next wooden creation. I too like the wooden box you have made and would like to see it with some moss and 'stuff' all over it. I have some old decking that I recovered from a play set in the back yard that I have been saving for a bench project because I think the 'stuff' all over it adds character that would be lacking if I just used new wood.

Ron...
![]() I do hope my friend to be able to justify your good faith some day. Nothing would please me more. I think that the next time I might try using solid cedar for the base. I may have to do some looking to find a plank wide enough. But it would be fun. ![]() Somethings should be done for the simple pleasure of the doing... this was one. Your friend always, Victrinia |

BZee... have you tried using a two part epoxy on this kind of project? I have never used the stuff... so I would be at a loss... though I have had several people suggest it.
Kind regards, Victrinia |

Nice. I salute you for your efforts.
Have you considered putting a hardware cloth bottom as opposed to plywood with holes? It is available with 3/16" spacing so a course drainage layer could be added to keep finer soil from sifting thru. A simple frame of 2x2 with one or 2 cross braces would support the wire cloth no problem and you would have much better drainage without the plywood rot. If you build more check around your area for marine plywood. It's glue is rated for submersion - not just exposure. It is commonly fir plywood but there are a lot of imports ranging from okume (African import) to baltic birch (Russian import). I have used all of them for similar things and have yet to see any signs of rot. I always skip the sealer as I use the proper wood rated for the exposure. Plywood would also give you the opportunity to rip boards to whatever width you need. One sheet could do many boxes. Again - good job.
