A tip for "Earthgirl"

Or, any one else who is interested.

After I posted this pic of this drying rectangle I have at home on Al's thread , it reminded me of the discussion via PM's we had last week about some slab construction tips.

This pic shows:
1. The "dropped-in" bottom from above into the tapered sides. This allows you to eliminate the seams showing at bottom on sides .Now they are INSIDE the pot. The pre-punched drain/wiring holes can be used as finger holds to drop it in while leather hard. Then seal with slip and coils.
BTW, this clay is med/dk brown when fired, kinda like Japanese clay.

2. The ONE-PIECE top rim, cut ,as you noted, like a picture frame. This allows you to have a SEAMLESS top and eliminate seam cracks and/or bumps that you always have using pieces. Seams on two flat pieces of clay are mighty hard to hide. I hate that!
In the "olden days" I used to sand them before bisque, especially in my trademark 5-sided asymmetrical pots with so many pieces, but, that got old FAST!!!
Regards,
Dale

Hi Dale

Thanks for showing the drop in bottom method and picture frame rim. I will "have a bash" and see how I get along with it. As much as a like imperfection I am still open to any other method of pot making. I think if everybody liked the same style of pot then it would not be worth making them, "one man's meat is another mans poison".

The land and water pot looked fantastic, I tried using glass in my water section but it looked a bit to contrived.

All the best and thanks for sharing

Andy

Poison...
Uh Huh
yes, I read and had to chuckle a bit, at the the comments on a couple threads in "The Other newsgroup" on pot "Imperfections" .
Myself, I'd rather do it the best way to get the least "imperfections" , so that I didn't have to say I did it that way on purpose.

Wasn't keen on giving "tips", now I know why.

Dale

Joanie,
All finished....
High fired this last weekend. It's glazed w/ a dry, matt gray granite glaze.

MMMMMMM sharp looking! Are you using oxides to color the outside first, then? The inside clay is red, the bisque on the feet is black.

What a fantastic pot!

Joanie,
I use two types of the dark coloring applied in one of three ways

The clay really isn't red, it just looks that way from the lights.( especially funny looking on top of rails ) I have a tuff time getting correct colors on unglazed parts. It is a chocolate-y brown very similar to your typical japanese bonsai pot brown that we commonly see.
Notice....no seams visible outside
only on bottom and inside.

Had to mention something.

I really like this discussion and I think it's very indicative of why this board is so good. Not particularly because the subject matter is dear to my heart but because it's professionals (that would be you, Dale) describing the tips and tricks of their profession. Sharing countless years of experience with us.

I think it's great. I'm going to start another thread on this.

Thanks again.
