Terra Cota
I remember we had a post back in the day about this. My question is simple, are terra cotta pots good for planters for trees in training and actual planters. I.e. I have a actual bonsai pot that is terra cota, given to me, and sometimes the water dripper bottom things, whatever they are actually called, if you can drill them, make some nice cheap round shallow pots, they also have bulb bots that are shallower then normal pots, and ideal for bonsai. So he question is, is terra cota going to provide okay results, or should I stick to plastic and whatever normal bonsai planters are made of?

Terra cotta is fine. Japanese growers use terra cotta pots for bonsai. They Japanese pots look a little like our bulb pots, maybe more like a large flower pot that has been shrunk vertically. They have a much larger drainage hole or holes on the bottom, however.
Terra cotta breathes well. In some areas it's not frost proof, so if you are in Minnesota or something, it might crack on you. They stain easily and crumble over time, but there probably isn't any better container for growing plants. The one thing you will need to do is improve the drainage by drilling more holes, and unfortunately Terracotta doesn't drill well. If you have a drill press it is much, much easier. Use a masonry drill and drill a small pilot hole and then bring the larger drill in from one side, then the other, and keep a bit of water running on the work. Regards, Matt
