standards or guidelines for pots?

I'm fairly new to bonsai...I have been working with 4 trees for about 2 years now and I've just started making my own pots. *I was wondering if there are any particular guidelines to the aesthetics of the pots. *So far, my only goal has been to have a couple of simple pots ready for repotting, so I've been "eyeballing" it and making them like other pots i've seen. *Any suggestions?

Re: standards or guidelines for pots?

I'm new at it, too, and made some pots that looked terrible because they were so out of proportion. They went it the bucket of water rapidly filling with rejects. I'll re-knead the clay sometime (maybe )

I went to my catalogs and began getting the basic dimensions from manufactured pots that I liked and am using those. Can't miss that way. Maybe when I'm more experienced I can vary it. Sort of like Bonsai. Most of mine have followed classical designs and just now, I'm starting to be more creative with the design. When I first started and tried to be creative I had some very wierd look bonsai!

Fellow Clay Guys,
* *Making bonsai pots is a great off shoot of our great hobby. *Jim Barrett is my inspiration. *He has a love of pots. *He likes to feel them to figure out how they were made, what type of clay was used, how they were fired and to what temperature.
* *Our best teacher is good quality Japanese pots. *Just get your hands on some and you will get all the aesthetics you will ever need!
