Shohin Pot Gold Mine

At the annual sale I bought a shoebox full of small pots. I love to buy small pots in lots like this, you never know what you are going to get. I purchased this whole box for $5.00 bucks.

I bought them from John Roehl, a guy that has been in the club for over thirty years. I bought a box from him 15 years ago, and found many treasure in it then. I expect to find many more in this lot as well.

I estimate that some of these pots are as old as he has been doing bonsai. Some were probably old when John bought them. He has been to Japan and China a few times and always brings small pots home with him. I am sure some of these are directly from the kilns.

When I got home I spread them all out.

Its going to take some time and elbow grease to get all these pots cleaned up for next year. Of course what else do I have to do for the next couple of months?

A few close ups of the stand out pots.

Almost all of these pots look to be Japanese, with a few Chinese pots.

This is not a white pot. This is what a lime coating in Fresno looks like if you don't clean your pots yearly.

This is the same pot with a damp paper towel dragged across it. Nice green mottled glaze and extreamly thin walled. they don't make pots like this much anymore.

A pot in a shape that was very popular about thirty years ago. This one looks to be Chinese, but I'm not so sure. This one will have to be cleaned very carefully.

The bottom of the pot yeilds a nice little signature. I will take the whole load to LA with me next month at the Bonsai-a-thon and have Jim Barrett look them over. He is very knowledgeable when it comes to shohin pots.

This little rectangle is done in a nice color. I like the contrast between the non-glazed area and the glazed area. Lots of cleaning.

A nice textured rice bowl design. This one will undergo the acid test. That is the only way to get the white out! Acid and brush, gloves and goggles. I have the two mates to this set. I bought them in the other lot 15 years ago. They are smaller, and I have a small triple trunk shimpaku in it.
