Thumbs up Sara Rayner pots

Hello one and all,

Went to the MBS Fall auction on Tuesday nite. I picked up a few pots and thought I would share them here with you. Two semi cascades (5"x3", 7"x5"), a drum (13"x3"), an oval(7"x4"x3"), and a saucer(6"x2"). I will include a follow up post of previous Sara pots, for those virtual artists that may like to use them. I know a few pictures arent exactly at the level desired for the virtuals. I can retake them if anyone is interested in a particular pot for virtuals.

Paul

Paul,

Some VERY nice pots there. Thanks for sharing them.

Can you give me some History/Details on Sara, since I come across her name quite often - so guess she is well known on that side of the "pond".

Any links to other articles or a web page ?

Best regards,

Bart,

Thanks for the link. Very nice pots on there.
She probably has the same problems as us in trying to meet
demand, when pots of that quality take so..so long to create.

Does Sara not frequent these pages ??

The auction was great. I do have alot of pots, but when it comes to great pots, I am limited to the ones shown here. I have loads of ceramic and clay pots that I just dont need. Alot of mame sized ones as well. I can do without those. Mostly I trade them at our meetings for trees and cash, but once in a while I like to give donate them to worthy things.....

Sara lives in Redwing Mn, and is a member of the Minnesota Bonsai Society. Her wares have made an impact here in the states. Like many other good potters, she has a following of "groupies"...me being one of them. I know that she was doing the normal pottery wares....and was doing bonsai as well.....then she started making bonsai pots for herself, then did some for friends etc.....

I have yet to see her on the forums, here or there. And the website given is the only place else I have seen her stuff on the net. What I like most about her pots are the fact that they are highly vitrified (sp?). They hold up in our deep frozen winters without fail. I love the sound that they make when you hold them and give them a little flick of the finger.....music to my ears. Try that with your run of the mill ceramics....you make get a ting or two in there....a sign of a not so good pot.

any how...preaching to the choir i am sure.

Paul

Paul,

If you did not know already, I am now learning the "trade" under the direction of David Jones - and the first thing he does when taking anything out of the kiln is to give each pot a "good flick" of the finger. It certainly is a nice sound!

Again, do this to some of the lower cost imports and you can certainly "hear" the difference!. Having said that, if the style, colour and size seems ideal for one of your trees and the price seems value for the quality - then go for it !!

Apart from the obvious satisfaction of the "ring", it also confirms that all is well with the pot and that the high firing needed for stoneware has not caused any cracks to appear.

It is now early on Saturday morning here, and I am so excited again at the thought of adding feet to my first three "shohin sized" handmades when I go to the pottery in a hour or so. As Andy at Stonemonkey has said, it is great to have "hands on" feel with the clay and I guess my Artistic half from my design training, gives me the desire to press forward with my own styles - I have a "buzzing" head full of styles I want to make - but not yet the ability !

It will be some time before my efforts will be commercial and worthy of the "Walsall" name - but I may post a few pictures after they are fired.
You never know - someone may like my early works - could become a good investment !!!!!!

Hi Ian

You will definatley have to post some pics of your finished pots. I also agree with the "Ring", very satifying sound for high stoneware fired pots. The only problem is when there is not a clear ring, usually indicating a crack but the glaze is supereb, such is life.

Regards

Andy
