Old Bonsaiman-new pots

A QUICK and EASY pot
When I first started making pots they were ALL slab pots, mostly shohin and mame.
As pots got bigger, techniques got more involved. I decided last weekend to make an old style slab oval pot and photo the assembly. This is a quick and easy made pot. First clay is rolled out and a pattern is used to mark and cut the bottom. Note, it is pre-marked for drain hole/wiring hole spots. Then clay is cut out and drain holes cut. Some rough side slabs are rolled and cut to rough length and exact height I want.

This is an easy/quick pot because the sides are SIMPLY attached and overlapped for a contemporary flare. Slip is used to "glue" sides and a tool is used to smooth joints.
Note they are cut at an angle where overlapped and attached off-center of pot side to further have a contemporary flare and to keep from having them directly in front of your face when viewing. This becomes more important later after decorating and finishing.

Assembly finished.
pot and joints cleaned. A few pre-decoration touches. The "most Important" touches added After a few weeks of drying I'll show this pot bisqued, decorated (glazed) and the final high-fired result. This pot is 12" long before shrinking in drying and firing, and about 2 1/4" deep inside. I have about ONE hour, or a little more, in this pot at this point. I hope you enjoyed. Dale

Thanks Freak,
BTW, it's not just "original".... there is not another one just like it. That's important to me. Thanks, Dale

Neat Dale! I like the way you handled the over laps. I have been placeing them on either end But not on overlaps, I make a cut to bring buts together, then smooth out the seam.
Takes me about 5 hrs to get to this point. Bob O |

Yes Bob, If you want to have a seam that doesn't show the overlapped joint you describe is a good way. To get a "jointless" oval you need a wheel or mold. Which, is much safer to resist a seperation crack. This extreme overlap I used is more of a "decoration technique" ,I guess , than anything else. It is more "pleasing" ( I should say) in the final glazed product Hopefully you'll see.

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Dale, I really like this overlap pot. It gives some character to the pot. Over the last few years I have watched your work go from real nice to top draw, but hey what do I know...and I miss getting my hands in clay but that is another story.

You say, "a quick and easy pot," but for those like me who are "all thumbs," I always think there
is magic in your hands (and all the other wonderful potters here on the forum). I always marvel at your work. |
