question on a new pot

i dont know who made this pot,it was purchased in the san bernardino area with small junipers in it.
today it was given to me sans trees.
its about 18"x12"x3".it has more holes on the top of the rock on the right.its all one piece.no can remove rock!
my first question is,
do you like it?second,
now do i clean it?third,
what would you do with it?

Re: question on a new pot

Looks to me like you need a quart of "muck" and a nice craggy little juniper to stick on it!! Or maybe a little boxwood.

Re: question on a new pot

The pot looks fine. Since it is glazed, I would expect to see a flowering bonsai or maybe one with interesting colored foliage in it. A collected crabapple, pomegranate, hawthorn or such could go well in it.

I have always felt that the roots-over-red-lava never look quite right, unless maybe you're planting some kind of tropical hawaiian trees. They always look funky to me, but if this has all been glued or concreted together, you don't have much choice.

I wouldn't use anything much stronger than a potato brush or maybe one of those green 3M potscrubber pads on it, and a little dishwashing soap.

Regards,

Matt

Re: question on a new pot

I don't think you would need to clean the rocks. If they are water spotted you might try scrubbing them with vinegar or very well diluted muriatic acid. (Wear gloves and eye protection)

Regards,

Matt

Re: question on a new pot

sorry matt,i was refering to the steralization of the planting area.
ive gotten used to washing my pots to prevent any disease the previous plant may have carried from infecting the new plant.
is this not an issue for planting in lava rock?

Re: question on a new pot

Oh. I was wondering why you wanted it clean.

Just soak in 10% bleach solution, then soak it in water overnight. Put it in full sun until it dries out to let the remaining bleach dissipate before you plant on it.

Regards,

Matt

better i think.
im going to try an edible fig in the hole top right,
a darwf pomegrantate in the main pot,in front of the rock on the left, and maybe som drawf mondo grass in the smaller holes and the main pot.
possibly elfin thyme on top left?
