Pottery workshop and demo

On Tuesday I had a fun time at the Bonsai Society of Upstate New York in Rochester, NY.
In the afternoon we had a pottery making workshop with 12 of the club members. They made a total of 42 interesting pots which I took home to do a little bit of further work on like cleaning up a bit, fixing and adding drain/wire holes, carving wiring channels and drainage channels.
After I get them all slowly dried I will oxide finish and fire them. I will glaze the "water" area of any L&W pots.
I think I have a pretty full kiln full....or more.

Like a dummy I forgot to take any pictures of the people working, although I had my camera and actually had to MOVE it a couple times during the afternoon!

Bill Valavanis took some shots with my camera later and managed to get this shot of all the pots lined up on trays.

The Demo

In the evening I did a pot making demo for the regular club meeting night.
Although the weather was sure getting nasty outside we still had a good turnout.
I brought a rectangular pot with me I had previously made for them to raffle off. The first pictures are of that pot.

Then I made a pot using the same forms while they watched and I explained what I was doing and answered a lot of questions. Since I had a time limitation, about 2 1/4 hours before we had to leave the meeting hall, I had to plan a few shortcuts in the finishing of the top rails of the pot. I used a rool of clay around the top of the sides and tapped it into a rugged rail which matched the tapped design I also put on the bottom rail. This cut out over an hours time and gave me a very unusual rustic look.
Here are some pictures of the assembly of the pot that Bill took while I worked.
After I got the pot home I touched it up a bit and am drying it. I hope to post a picture of it here after final firing and glazing.

The first three pictures are cutting out the side pannels and feet from rolled out clay that was leather hard and scored around my patterns, and then assembling the side panels.

The next four pictures are of cutting out the bottom and laying out the drain holes and then assembling the bottom to the sides .

The final steps,
Attaching the rolled top rails and "Hammer" decorating them and the bottom rail.
I hope you enjoyed this quick demo. I think they all had a good time!
I hope to post some shots of the finished pot in a few weeks.

I want to thank the group for having me up, and Bill V. for the great hospitality ( and the trip to the Rochester Harley dealer) and for taking these pictures of the festivities.

Regards,
Dale

Cool! That must have been quite a day. That's my kind of workshop.

Hi Dale

Looks like all had a good time. I love doing club demos when the members make their own pots. It always goes down well and there are always some surpirised looks when the members get their pot they made back from the kiln.

Kind regards

Andy

Mr. Dale,

It is unfortunate that you are located so far from San Antonio...It would be so wonderful and educational for our club members to have the opportunity to experience a workshop and demo program such as you have given for those 'lucky' folks in Rochester...In these great photos it is very apparent that you had no dificulty holding the attention of your audience...It is also obvious that they had fun 'making their own' and will be some pots they will be so proud to own...Thanks for sharing them and the story...

Regards
Behr
