pot size
Is there a rule on figuring out what size pot to use?

With the exception of cascades, the depth should ideally be equal to the diameter of the trunk. The diameter of the pot itself is related to the foliage, but I don't remember the ratio right now.
Hope that partially answers your question, Michael |

It also depends on the stage of development of the tree. Trees that are still developing trunks and branches should not be put in smaller pots as this will significantly slow growth down. Trees should be placed in their final "bonsai" pot only when they have already achieved the desired size/shape of the trunk and branches and minimal growth is needed to complete your design plans.

As per previous posts and the general rule for the final pot size is 2/3's of the height of the tree.As said before this may vary depending on the style.Peter

as the final design stages are reached the guides i use are some of the above + except cascade height of pot ( not counting feet) = width of trunk. taller designs; 2/3 height of tree = width of pot shorter, wider designs; 2/3 width of tree = width of pot (sometimes these can also look better if the depth of the pot is shallower than the width of the trunk. multi trunks and clumps for example.) some trees just need to hold more soil ( for vitallity. your zones and micro climates may determine this also )full stop and there a compramise needs to be reached. forests always look better in a shallow pot width to compliment the space designed.
