Old Chinese Pot
I am repotting into this pot today and took some pictures with the hope that someone might know something about the era of this pot or some background.
These are pictures of an old Chinese pot. It is large. It weighs almost 50 lbs - the dimensions are 28.5"length x19.25"width x8.5"deep. This is an very unique piece (some may call it gaudy - please don't vote it into the ugly pot collection) and I am very much enamored with this pot. As you can see, the feet on the front are broken. Can they be repaired? Also, you may notice that there is a patina on the glaze. Should I take a mild abrasive to clean it? I think that the colors would come out better. - or is it kosher to keep the patina? |

Hi Candy,
I would never use a pot like that as a growing pot, and I strongly encourage you not to. It looks like an antique by the patina. Probably at least 50 years old. It would be a shame to have water spotting, accidental damage, frost damage or cracks further damage this pot. Anyway the drainage holes are much to small for the health of a tree. If you insist on display a tree in it - you can use a training pot about the same size and expose it to the elements and so forth, then when you display you can switch to that pot for shows and so forth. As ornate as it is, it would be much better to enjoy it as a display piece indoors. Very few trees could compete with the design. I am curious what you had in mind for planting in this pot anyway? Regards, Matt

Matt - I am returning the Hackberry that has lived many happy years to this pot. It simply has not been repotted for many years and that is my task. I will get you a photo before the night is over. -Candy
