New Pots

So I have been quiet for a while on this board. The kiln at the center hasn't been fired in a while, But, I did get back this group of pots.

Some additional info:
1- Sorry for the white out type stuff all over the pix. The background had to be cleaned of some writting.

2- The rectangle pot has given me a lesson....make sure of the size you want first! It is 8.5 by 3.25 by 1.75 tall (inches). This is not a very useful shape.... oh well!

3- the round pot is 5 inches... the off round in the front right is approx 5.5 inches and the oval pot is 6.5 x 5 inches... all these are nearly 2 inches tall.

I feel at this point that I can produce a slab built pot! Not good enough to do for others but good enough for me! As for the wheel, I am getting better, enough said.

On an aside, While at the studio last night picking up these pieces, I heard s@#$% from the back. Someone was cleaning and trimming a dish they were makeing for themselves (not for bonsai). I went over and the person said they were going to have to throw out this pot... "its got a hole in it". Well the hole is in the middle on the bottom... I asked if I could take it for a tree and the person was delighted.... Sooooo if you are going to a studio and can't seem to throw round pots, keep your eyes and ears open! I'm sure this is not the only pot that has had a hole put into it during trimming. Let the people know, they must likely would rather see the pot go to you then be a waste.

Al, thanks for the good word.. As for the black, I guess it is the old story of it makes things less noticeable. My ability, or my belief in my ability is not that great.....So, I try and make the pots not stand out!

I've read as a general rule of bonsai on this forum that the tree should be the focus of the bonsai,
So your black pots may indeed add to the appearance of your trees.

Nice work though, especially for a beginner.
remember if you beleive in yourself and your work then you can accomplish exactly what it is you are after.

So today was a bit, well, nasty. Was not able to do much, so I decided to repot three trees that were in need of new pots. Two are Ficus, and the third is an airlayer of a Quince done late in the season. I used three of the pots shown above.... I think the pots are OK!

Most Recent Pot

Hi all, This is a pot I made in late December 2002 at the community center. My wife has given me as a gift a 9 week session with a well known local potter. I hope to start the class in Feb/March. For now this is my best yet.... and yes, I finally got one on the wheel!
