Hi Jim

Thanks for the compliments and the weblink. It will prove helpful. At the moment I am very "small fry" and I am just starting to get established in this country. Wallsall are an excellent company and produce fine handmade bonsai pots on a larger scale than I. It would be nice to see some quality English pots in the far flung corners of the world. As for me I will plod along and fingers crossed and a stroke of luck I might be able to make a name for myself in the future. A dream at the moment but I hope to make it reality.

Ian

Sorry mate can't make Shefield, family commitments. David did invite me up to the studio if I was passing. I hope to meet with you allat some point, even if I have to wait till the next BTA at Capel Manor, my nearest.

Regards to you both

Andy

I'm just a hacker myself. I do handbuilt work- just don't have tons of time... I've got a batch I just finished trimming but not sure if I'll have time to fire this week...

I read "ClayArt" daily- where the sharing and theft of glazes and designs in general, is an oft discussed topic.

I act as a bonsai supplies distributor- I do not have a formal shop or nursery- just mail order, shows, and guests. Grows a little bit each year without too much work, so I'm always interested in new sources. My biggest issue is the price compared to demand- they don't always move fast enough for the capital outlay. Everyone loves handmade pots, including myself, but not enough are willing to pony up. Worse comes to worse I always have the "Right" pot! ;^)

Ian, if you're interested in talking more about pot sales PM me.

Jim

This thread is amazing. I am just returning to clay work. I have a degree in Art Education and then followed a different path. Missing it, I've come back to it and am taking a wheel-throwing class to scrape the rust off, so to speak.

While in school, I was pretty good at handbuilt and sculpture but never mastered the wheel, never learned how to fire, or how to do glazes. I hope to learn all of that. My dream is to start making money with it somewhere down the road, so's I can purchase a wheel and a kiln...and a house big enough to have a studio...

For right now, I just want to get my hands in it again. I added all of you to my buddy list, hope that's ok. (New to the forum and all). I wasn't into bonsai when I was working in clay before. Now I really want to make some of my own pots.

My problem is I think I got "throw thin" so ingrained in me that I may have to thicken things up a bit to be viable for durable bonsai pots...

Anybody ever tried doing raku pottery for bonsai? I looked at the Northwinds website-gorgeous stuff!!!

Anyway, I'm rambling...nice to "meet you."

BTW, I did experiment with homemade hypertufa bonsai pots before I got my hands back into clay. Interesting stuff....

Happens...
Throwing "thin" is over-rated, although its nice to pick up a pot that feels like nothing, they are completely decorational IMO. But then you get into they are true art because Art is something with no purpose(according to some.) Nevermind...

Hi Earthgirl,

Firstly the Hokey Cokey DEFINATLY IS what it's all about!

Glad to hear that you are getting back into the clay thing. I have been making Bonsai pots for about 3 years now. I only started when my now ex- wife done a ceramics course and being that I was into Bonsai I put 2 and 2 together and started to make my own pots. So if it was not for Bonsai I don't think that I would have ever gotten into pottery. I love making pots, it is so addictive. What better way to do something you enjoy and make a bit of a return on it too.

Glad to be on your buddy list, will put you on mine.

Look forward to viewing your pots

Kind Regards
Andy

Yeah, I was pretty proud of some thin ones I threw this week and then realized they were worthless as pots. One bump from the evil, crazed kamikaze neighbor cats, and they're toast. O well, it would give me something to sue the neighbors for... >

Andy, that IS inspiring that you've been doing bonsai pottery for three years after a class...I do like your "primitive" pots by the way. I think I may go ahead and do some hand building between wheel sessions...

Hi Earthgirl

Go for it girl, I have not made a pot for a week and I am getting withdrawl symptoms, I am looking after my daughter while her mum is on holiday, but it has given me the opportunity to work on some trees. Back to the mudslinging next week, no rest for the wicked eh? Can't wait. So many ideas, so little time. It is torture...

Don't forget to get some pics of your pots on the forum. You may find the Internet Bonsai Club website forum handy as there are quite a few pots on there too.

Here is another for starters,

Happy potting

Andy
