My first bonsai pot

I hope I'm not offending the clay gods by posting an unfired pot, but I just wanted to share. It will be a while before I get a kiln and can fire it, and I just didn't want to wait (the only place I can find to fire cone 6 here will only do a full 12 cu ft load). The pot is about 6" (15 cm) in diameter, 1.25" (3 cm) deep. It should fire to a color similar to the way it looks now.

Overall, I'm very pleased with my first effort. I didn't really have a plan in mind when I made it, I just sort of let the clay decide. I do need to work on carving the foot into feet, I think the clay was still a little wet when I tried. I might also do better cutting notches out rather that trying to make individual feet.

Nice indeed . . . especially for a first pot.

Very impressive for your first pot. You did a good job with the feet.

That is an excellent pot! Very nice work, very controlled!

(applauding)

You're going to be a force to contend with.

Hi Darrellw

Very good first pot well done.

If I can give you a bit of advice, from a Bonsai point of view, I would put a few more tying in holes in the bottom of the pot. In my experience and the request from some of my customers, more tying in holes are a must have. It just gives the Bonsai Artist more choice on how to wire the tree into the pot. Also make them big enough to take 2mm wire.

Wait till you start glaze testing, that will make your head hurt

Look forward to seeing your first firing

Kindest regards

Andy

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the kind words.

Andy,

How do you make your tie down holes? I used a piece of brass tubing, but I had to got back and forth a few times to get them clean.

I'm a beginer at making pots (using slab technique), I live just north of you and I made a couple of rounds pots. Something I learned from one of them...

A pot on 3 feet will never rock...
but a pot on 4 feet might.

You are right. The reason I did four was that I was eyeballing it, and figured I could get four even better than three. Next time I'm going to make up a pattern/jig of some sort.

PS I've seen your pots on another forum, very nice work!
