My First Batch
I unloaded the kiln this morning with my first batch of bonsai pots. I snapped a few quick shots. If anyone is would like to see more, I'll take some more and closer shots.
I'd really appreciate any feedback. Best, Kevin Here's some small ones (the size reference is a quarter leaning on the riser).... Last edited by muddslinger : 25-Sep-2003 at 09:09 PM. |

I don't know about other people, but I think these pots are really beautiful, from a pottery perspective. I'd love to see the glazing up close. I know alot of people like plainer containers that don't distract from the trees, but i'm a sucker for glaze.

Kevin,
I think I'd be able to give you much better feedback if I could test-drive them, so to speak, for, say....five years or so? Especially that green one in the back left? My address is Old Mister Crow Seattle, WA. 98195 ![]() More seriously? They're absolutely gorgeous. I can try to provide constructive criticism as well, though I'm not sure I have to much to add and it's hard to be certain of anything from the photos. So take the following with a grain of salt. From what I can see, the feet are probably the weaket part of the current designs. My personal preference would be to see them less obtrusive in shape and probably glazed, as well. But obviously, the design of feet on bonsai containers is an entire subject in and of itself, and perhaps this was exactly what you were trying to accomplish. I look forward to seeing more of your work! Best regards, Carl

I should clarify my first post. I was talking about the feet on the mame pots. The feet on the second batch, the larger pots, are lovely in my opinion.
These look like really beautiful pots! -Carl

Coupla ovals.....
They're a little warped. These are the only two that survived out of about 8. It's a tricky technique, but I think I've got it down now. |

Really nice pots...As OMC indicated, I also would like to test drive some of these for you...The shapes and choice of glazes are very tasteful...I would be proud to display trees in work of this caliber...Unlike OMC, I like the idea of the special treatment on the feet of the mame pots...If you ever get so many laying around that you need to offer some of your work for sale on this site, I do believe you will be able to make some room for more quickly...This sort of craftmanship and artistry does tend to enforce your handle...'muddslinger'...Keep up the excellent work, and keep us informed with more of these nice photos...

Maineward,
Thank you, I like that one too. Way Downeast is Buck's Harbor/Machiasport..... on the coast in Washington county 'bout 45 min. from the Canadian border. Carl, Thank you as well. Maybe we can work something out with that little green guy. As I said, this is my first attempt at bonsai pots and I'm eager for feedback. You can only get real feedback when someone uses your pots, eh? I've just become obsessed with bonsai this summer, so I’m open to trade for books, tools, trees, etc.? If you’re interested, PM me. Thanks very much for the feedback on the mame feets, some of them are quite obtrusive. These wee ones were thrown “from the hump” and I left a ton of clay at the bottom and I was just experimenting. I kinda like that blue one in the middle though. Best, Kevin I’ll post some closer shots with numbers for easier reference in case anyone wants dimensions or anything. #1 a round one, about 9in diameter, 1.5” high. Stoneware, supposed to be a black matte glaze on top, unglazed with an iron oxide wash on bottom…….. |
