My First Attempts
Hello All,
As requested by some members, here are my first three pots out of the kiln this weekend. These are all hand-made by myself to my designs - but I think you will see the influence of my teacher David Jones. These are all "Shohin" sizes, since you are able to create these a lot quicker, while still learning the pitfalls - before moving up in scale. I have some larger ones in progress at the moment. On the left is a Rectangle about 5" x 3", Middle is an oval around the same dimensions and lastly a round of 3 inches diameter. Please feel free to critique, since only by your input can I refine my own style. Ian |

For a first attempt - hell, for any attempt - I think you have a great talent in the making. I especially like #15957

Ian,
Looking excellent for first attempts. I like the new glaze colour (left hand picture). I picked up one of the shohin slip-moulds for a Zelkova in that colour the other week. Keep it up. Regards, Fish.

Hi Ian,
Fantiastic work! I'm very impressed, those are probably some of the best "first attempts" I've ever seen. My first pots should have looked so good. Keep up the great work. Kevin

Ian,
I love all these pots, very well done! The first one - the thick glaze works really well I think. This is the sort of pot I would come home from Dai-ichi with, even if I had no tree suitable for it! Regards, Chris.

Mr Ian,
Congratulations on a job well done with those first pots...It would appear you have a couple very good teachers, and they have a very quick learning student... To add my thoughts...Learn all you can as quickly as you can...Come to the United States and bring that knowledge with you so we can have some of those nice pots on this side of the pond, at more affordable prices...Then you will have a new 'day job' Keep up the good work, and we will be enjoing your progress...Keep 'em coming... Regards Behr ![]() |
