All the pots that I have fired range from small Shohin pots to larger 12 - 14" pots. I tend to just make what comes out rather than aiming for a particular type of pot, unless anyone specifies they want a particular type.
Here are some more

Critique.
Andy,
All look good - with some particularly nice ones amongst them. I am actually getting more involved on manufacture myself now and fully appreciate the time, effort and work that is put into producing "quality" pots. Perhaps people can appreciate why hand-made items command higher prices. You seem to have "notched up" the quality in a very short space of time. Congratulations. |

Hi Ian
Thanks for the compliments Ian. It is a bit of a long process but I totally enjoy making pots. I suppose along with Bonsai it has become part of my life now. I am trying to get my pots off the ground and sell. I sell the majority of them through a small independant Bonsai nursery in Kent, although they are at trade price. On the other hand I am also trying to sell them via my own website, but advertisement is the name of the game there and funds are limited. I noticed that you sold some Wallsall pots via Ebay, what was the response like? Thanks again for the encouragement it is nice to know that fellow Bonsai potters admire your work. One last note if you see David Jones tell him thankyou for the clay he gave to me at the Maidstone Bonsai demo for me to try out. The clay was good to work with I made a small thrown pot and it came out a treat in my gas kiln, good unglazed colour too. Kind Regards

Andy,
I shall see David later in the week and will pass on your comments. With regard to e-bay sales - they are a good way of getting to a mass audience and getting your "name" about. However, the more expensive the pot - the more people will always like to "see it in the flesh" so to speak. So this, together with expensive posting costs for heavy pots, means that you can really only sell your smaller pots on Auction sites. Also, for every pot you sell, there maybe 3 that dont - and you still have to pay the listing fees !!!l I think e-bay are making more than anyone on pot sales. Hence, you will not make a fortune that way ! Putting your products into Bonsai Nurseries is the best bet - since doing the Shows can be an expensive exercise. Most will barely break even by the time you put Stand hire, Travelling Expenses and your downtime into it. (i.e. You're not producing stock) If you want to maintain pot manufacture as a "paying hobby" and not a "living" then try to rely on selling to local enthusiasts at your Club meetings etc.. Hope this helps. All the best. |

Andy,
Here is a quick comparison of very similar styles. Your pot and one I just sent out from Mark Jones who is the "junior" (hope he does not mind that ! ) at Walsall. |

Thanks for the pic. Nice to know that I am keeping up with the Jones' Pardon the pun. It's funny really as a potter I tend to like other people pots more than my own. Perhaps it is just an occupational hazard. Thanks again Andy
