Material

Allot of the time, I am seeing this new resin-like material being used as a bonsai pot, and even some of the older ones I have seen are or appear to not be made from clay and some other substances. So I understand clay, and glazed on outside are okay, but what other planter material works well, are these resin ones okay, are some others better?

Re: Material

I think you mean mica bonsai pots. They are a mix of mica and graphite bound together with polyethylene. The color is almost always a chocolate brown.

These pots are fine for growing and training. Their main feature is that they are virtually unbreakable and inexpensive to ship because they are lighter and less prone to damage than ceramic. You can batter them around a bit in the car while traveling or knock them about on the growing bench. That's about all they have going for them.

Mica pots generally have excellent drainage provision because the drainage holes are molded right in. If you need more holes, or a place to secure a wire or two, just drill right through it.

Mica pots don't breathe, but for all intents, neither do glazed pots. They are inert, and because they are usually very thick, have some thermal insulation properties.

Most any container can work well for bonsai provided it has the all-important drainage holes of sufficient size.

Re: Material

Kris,
I agree with treebay on mica pots from Korea.Mica pots are thick and heavy. When you say "resin" do you mean plastic becuse there are thin plastic ones as well. I have also seen a thicker resin type pot on some mallsai at Target recently. They have the feel of plastic but the look of ceramic.
They are all considered training pots as far as I'm concerned. You would never have a show tree in this type of container.
I would only use one as a temporary pot. After a basically finished tree is out of its training pot you might want to use one to shape the roots in a rectangular way. This would be a good temporary use of one untill the final pot could be found.
