Hi ScruffMgruff,
Welcome to the forum. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but 1500f isn't really even hot enough to make pots for indoor use. Unless maybe you find a special low, low fire clay. Cone 06 is about 1800f and that's considered low fire and not frost proof. You need to get to at least cone 6 (around 2200f) to be frost proof. I suspect your kiln may have some dead elements that could be repaired. If you have any info on the kiln, I may be able to tell you if it should reach higher temps when functioning properly. Best, Kevin

hey, thanx muddslinger
i made the kiln for glass annealing and works well for that. i can throw another element in it, but i think the ceramic fiber blanket only rated for 2200f. im walkin distance from an art center, might throw them a couple bucks to fire mine on there next batch. or make another kiln if i really like makin this stuff where do u get ur materials from? any neat glazing techs u came up with? |

Mgruff,
Impressive you built your own electric. I'm trying to put together a fiber oval gas kiln. Still in the planning stages. I would like to make some 3 foot long ovals for forests, you know. I can do 2 footers in my electric, now. but everyone wants them bigger, ya know. As for materials where are you at? these thing need to be bought locally, so heavy.I use all laguna materials. http://www.lagunaclay.com/ Do you know clayart? All you everwanted to know about clay http://www.potters.org/categories.htm peace be with thee

Just for kicks, here's a link to someone who also built their own kiln. It's a big one--
Talk about over kil(n) . Check the "technical information" link on the page for the kiln tour. Ron does large to extremely large pots- between 15 inches to over 22 inches long. http://www.langbonsai.com/ |

Rockem ,
Thanks for the link I learned a lot. I've got several other links to kiln construction if any one is interested. Rockem on...
