My friend is B.F.A. (sculptor), and I have persuated him to start making bonsai pots. Any advices are apreciated. |

Marija,
Although not the cheapest you will find on the internet, I recently completed Webpages for "Walsall" and postage to Croatia would not be too expensive. Please note these are "Quality" pots and not mass produced. see Walsall Website www.walsall-studio-ceramics.com There are plenty of other potters with webpages and stock available to buy on-line. Try a search in Google or Yahoo. Best Wishes, Ian Last edited by Ian_Homer : 21-Mar-2005 at 08:51 PM. |

Because - I need lots of pots, so thay would be heavy for transport - It is hard to choose a pot, only looking at picture - It would be nice to have possibility to buy pots in Croatia. Other bonsai grovers here also need pots, I am trying to resolve that problem, but not on ly buy a few pots for me! I am interested in fireing proces?! Which clay is the best? Stoneware? Do I need some special glases for high temeperatures? Last edited by marija hajdic : 22-Mar-2005 at 03:59 AM. |

Making pots isn't a thing that's learned in a year or two and it's also expensive--probably just as expensive (or more) in the long run as importing pots from outside your country. As you learn (even after you've been doing it for awhile), you will be throwing away probably more than half of what you make since the pots will warp, explode in the kiln or some other calamity involved with learning how to make them.
Also, most potters have very very little idea of how to make a bonsai pot. It takes a long while to get them to do it well (believe me, I've worked with some local potters and the learning curve isn't an easy one for some of them who have no background in bonsai) By all means, get local potter to make bonsai pots. or learn how to do it yourself, just don't expect to have anything worthwhile, perhaps not even useable, for some time. You can import less expensive Chinese pots, or even Japanese tokoname, if can find enough fellow bonsaiists to order in bulk. Ordering custom made pots over the Internet is also relatively easy. I've ordered pots from Bryan Albright in the U.S. and Horst Heinzlereiter in Austria, as well as tokoname pots from J-Bonsai in Japan. I ordered single pots, or three at the most and didn't have to order in bulk. Importing bonsai pots is alot easier than you think. Most of the Western potters will work with you via email photos on the style and dimensions of the pot you want. If there is a demand for such pots in Croatia, you also might want to inquire with those potters about buying a few dozen at a time, then selling them to your friends... |

Their are so many variables. Yes stoneware is best. Do you have the kiln available. Do you have to formulate your own clay and glazes from raw materials? No special glasses are needed, unless you like to stare into the kiln for long periods of time at white hot temps. Kiln first !!! there is no use making a bunch of high fire pottery and not have a kiln to reach vitrification.
