Makin' a land & water pot for a tree...a photo essay

I enjoyed doing the photo essays on a couple tree stylings so I thought I'd do a step-by-step post on making a pot for a specific tree.
I have a strange Ficus Burt Davyi "normal" that I wanted to make a land & water pot for so I thought I'd take some series photos of it (and a couple other contemporary pot projects I'm working on.)
The interesting thing about doing this is that you never know how it will come out. The pot could be ruined at any step in drying/firing/glazing or it might not fit after firing.
We'll see....

Anyway. I started with a casually rolled out slab of no particular shape.
From there I built up a shallow "pot" area at one end using whatI guess would be considered "coiling" method although it was actually narrow strips of clay, cut in pieces and blended in.
The "water area" was then rolled up and pushed into shape as I went along.
The coiled pot construction gave me nice crags and cracks when manipulated into shape. These should look real neat after coloring and firing.
The outside edge of the water area is textured to look nice after coloring.

The pot is now dried and in bisque firing today. I forgot to measure it overall before bisqueing but I think about 20" long.

More to come.....I hope

Dale

Nice essay, Dale!!! Do you have problems with drying it flat? Do you put it on plaster board or something??

It's going to be a really nice land/water pot.

Joanie,
I've never really had any problems with drying slabs. I guess it's because of the coolness of my basement and the other things I do to dry them. It takes a while to get them to handling leatherness.
I know most tile makers put slabs BETWEEN sheets ofplasterboard but I've found it's not good to have them drying on something that sucks out water faster on one side than the other.
The biggest problem with making these large l&w's is getting it flipped over to do the wiring channels and drain channels underneath while leather hard because they are so heavy and tops are irregular, EASILY BREAKABLE, but, I think I've gotten that cleverly figured out now and will mention it when I get that far in photo's. If I can do it without giving away too many secrets. Dale

The "bisqued" pot top and bottom.
Showing wiring and water drainage channels "cut" in AFTER cone 05 bisqued.
This was the first of a couple experimental pots doing this. This pot could have been flipped in leather-hard stage and carved fairly easily if careful, however, a couple of much bigger others I've done along with it would have been impossible to do that way.
Next step, coloring and glazing, then hihg fire.
Regards,
Dale

Fabulous post! I can't wait to try one. Have you ever tried carving the channels before you add the sides? I think that's what I'll try since I don't have access as of now to do a cone 5 fire.

Earthgirl,
Yes, you could certainly do that in a leather state of the clay, or even with a fresh slab, but you would have to be fore-thinking enough to know exactly where and how placed, size, etc. of the pot you intend on building on the flip side.
or, you could punch some holes/channels in the clay and then make it up as you go!
There's always more than one way to skin a cat,
or so they tell me

I unloaded both kilns today. More pots to show next week ( gotta get ready and go to a show tomorrow until sunday eve), but wanted to show the finished land and water.
Now, next week we'll see if the tree I made it for will fit in it. It MIGHT be too tight.
Regards,
Dale

Dale:

The lack of posted response doesn't mean no one is reading and learning from your postings.

Personally, I enjoy them, but don't have much to add to the discussion except "that's interesting" and "thanks."
-- after all, you've seen the kind of damage I am capable of inflicting on a defenseless lump of clay

Oh, yeah, I forgot "that's a really nice pot." You can just assume I think that about all of your stuff - cuz I do!
