hey, what is that in the bushes over there...

A large cloud of purple mist fills the room, then a subtle voice slowly begins to speak....

Zen,

Yes you Zen, this is the CLAY FAIRY, go to Good Dirt, heal your soul. Make the pottery to please your soul..go to Good Dirt. They have clay and a kiln all ready for you. It is your destiny...if you build it they will come...this is not a dream...but a dream come true.

...purple mist slowly begins to thin out and vanish taking the CLAY FAIRY with it.

Apparently clay fairies have no bones in their arms.

I always pictured a clay fairy sort of spattered with clay, barefoot, and with her hair pulled back so it doesn't get singed in the kiln. (Have you ever smelled burning hair? Did you know that it shrivels up on the ends? I speak from experience. 1900 degrees is HOT.)

Morea, what do you think that she would look like?

Joanie (my friends actually call me the Mud Goddess, just FYI. Not kidding)

Dear Joanie

OOOHHH Yes , That is hot !!!
Once i looked and smelled a reduction kiln,
roaring at 1280 *C , very close !!
My eyes got so dryed out i dont know what happend .
The nose and throat was sore for days .
But the gasses i sniffed up ...... made me very high !!!
Yes , nice occupation we have !!!!

You make me feel poethical by Your question.

The clay-fairy is in my mind definatly a LADY !
Capricious , sweet , unreachable , soft , stubbern.
sensual and inviting .
To be handled with much care and respect.
As One knows the way she likes to be touched
and taken care of she will reward you with all her beauty.

I real life it is an elderly man ,
German , muscles , sparkling eyes , called Gunther .
Kind regards
Morea

The clay fairy is, as you say, soft and capricious... she is also elusive, always promising more than she gives. She will reward you this time, and another time she will turn from you and laugh at your efforts. She gives you just enough to keep you coming back, but always lures you with her beautiful voice... to go farther in your quest for perfection.

Gunther is a Kiln God. He brings fire and strength. What you take from him, will last forever, through the heat of summer and the terrible frozen winters. It can be buried and will survive a thousand years under the ground, until it is revealed again by the soft rains washing away the earth.

There is more Joanie

As we know Clay fairy allows only Gunther to embrace , stir up and
come so close to her that she gives all her shape changing to him .
Some earth-lings have also discovered her weak points and got
into balance and forgiving her elusive nature.
This has grown out of the luring and comming back over and over again.
Time and tactil playing .

Her greatest weakness is . pure , clear , cristaline WATER .
Water combined with strong , soft and supple hands ,
Clay fairy gives her body and opens to earth-lings quest
Until she desides to stretch no longer or remembers her nature shape again.

It is the silent play of respectful discovering which can be done the best as
Clay fairy and Gunther allow You to be part of the world they are in .
Kind regards
Morea

Obtaining a kiln for a good price or finding the services of a kiln owner might not be that difficult to do.

Consider contacting studios in your area to see if they offer firing services. Often operators are glad to take in some extra firings to supplement their costs. Check the phone book for potters and porcelain doll makers. Call and ask.

Community centres and potters often offer classes in ceramics. Take a class. They may offer services to past students.

Potter suppliers may offer kiln services or may be able to refer you to one of their customers who does.

Watch for a used kiln. There are small electric models available that operate on 110V and often folks buy one with a hobby in mind then do not follow through with it then sell them very cheap. Potters suppliers will have a for sale board up in their facility. You can always put a 'wanted' up on their board or even in the local newspapers.

Artisans often congregate in a community. Finding a community and making a day trip might result in finding a lead on a good deal.

When you find a source, you have also found an 'expert' who may be willing to help you expand your horizons in making pots.

Good luck.

B.

Hey thanks, I have found a local couple that make folk pottery and the hubby is Pat Sheilds, the guitarist for the Georgia Mudcats, so we already have guitar in common, I will contacting them after the holiday to see if I can trade some cleaning or paint work for some teaching and use of their clay/kiln.
