The Kiln Across The Street

I am lucky to have a craft shop across the street with 3 electric kilns and a resident potter that has been very helpful in my branching out into Bonsai Pottery.

My first run was fired a couple weeks ago and these are the results.

The first two are a Walnut color 5 1/2" x 3", 5" x 2"

Then a Chocolate 5% grog 3" x 1 1/2"

Yellow 25% grog 4" x 3 1/2" and 3" x 1 1/2"

The rectangle was a slump build that I did before I got the wheel. It was also my first attempt at glazing...placing the white glass was a test. I call it Rocky Road...lol. it is
9" x 5".

Good start Wiliam.
Those are some nice wheel-thrown shohins.
I think i can tell which one was last pot thrown
The slump molded pot. Did they just happen to have a bonsai pot mold laying around there?

Dale

Thanks to all for the kind remarks.

Dale the slump mold was from an earthenware ceramic slip mold with a nice rectangle. Put it up on kiln shelf spacers and slumped her in.
Have more coming, just waiting for them to dry. The wheel stuff is getting larger the more I learn to control the clay. I also have a large slab rectangle I have my fingers crossed on making through the firing without cracking. It's been drying since Nov 10th.

Good effort Ent,

Throwing on the wheel is fun and not that hard, is it? Concentrate on your trimming for a clean professional look.

You seem to have access to several clays. Make sure your clays mature and are fired up in the stoneware temps to make a long lasting bonsai pot.

Keep it up, Watching with interest---RC

ps. Watch out for that inner lip curving inwards. Makes repotting a bear. Keep it straight or slightly outcurving.

Great job on these William and very remarkable for your first go at it!
You are lucky to have access to several kinds of clay in your classes.
Keep up the good work.

Bob O

P.S. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

Incurved pots are traditional in form in every Japanese and chinese catalog and very often seen in dispay.
Theres a key to solving the problem with rootbound trees in incurved rimmed pots....
Can you guess what it is?
