INTERESTED IN HISTORY OF POTS

this is my first post here, i am amazed by bonsai. i am a beginner but have know about bonsai since i was young. ive been really busy and have been moving around alot so i havent started any of my own yet. i am going to college right now and am hoping to make a set of bosai pots in ceramics. ive looked on the interenet and read every book on bonsai in my college and city libraries but have not found what i am looking for. i am more interested in a full history of techniques and styles from past to present. any help with a internet site or book would be greatly appreciated. i would love if you could post your favoriet pots or pots of historical significance.

thank you.

Re: INTERESTED IN HISTORY OF POTS

You might take a look in the bonsaiTALK Links section in the Education->History folder.

Most of what you're looking to read exists, but hasn't been translated into English as yet. The Japanese exhibition books are filled with historic bonsai containers, which usually originated in China hundreds of years ago. From time to time, there were articles in English concerning historic pots in the magazine Bonsai Today by Stone Lantern Publishing.

There is also a pot contest at the www.bonsaimuseum.com and I believe there is a pots gallery. There might be information at the manlung bonsai site. I forget the URL, but you could search in bonsaiTALK Links for it or on the web.

Good luck

Matt

Re: INTERESTED IN HISTORY OF POTS

John Naka's book, Bonsai Techniques II has a somewhat comprehensive section on the history of pots. He discusses the antique kilns of Yixing China, and the kilns of Tokonome, and Shigaraki Japan. Lots of pictures too. B&W though, but still very good. Best regards, Bonsaial

Dear Snow
Im very glad to hear that you are excited about bonsai and about making pots. You can learn tons by just looking at pots feeling their texture, their heft and their color.
Show your ceramic teacher some photos and pick his brain for suitable clays, glazes, stains and oxides. Check out these sites.
