YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Humility
Today I stopped by the studio to check on my work. I have gotten into a routine; throw pots on Thursday evenings, trim, glaze and pick-up pots on Monday or Tuesday days. Yesterday, I trimmed 9 pots, a few are real nice with another couple looking good but a few are well… we will see.
My first taste of multiple failure was this week. Sure I have had the pot that had a small crack in it or the glaze that just isn’t right after firing or the distorted pot but not really many al all. Yesterday, I was returned two pots that were going into the bisque kiln, they were just too thin, they both fell apart. Today I stopped by to get the pots that were in the glaze kiln. Only one of five is perfect. Sure three others are sort of OK, one is distorted but under where the tree will be, another only has a small hairline crack by the main drain hole, the third has a small hairline crack in the side by some interesting shaped effects I was trying. And….the last one has a crack around the inside that is perhaps 2/3 around the pot. Well I learned from these mistakes, or I hope I have, all of the failures were due to correctable operator error. Now, to be smart enough to not repeat those errors in the future….. Ah Humility! Jay

Hi Jay,
I feel for ya'! I can offer some consolation, maybe. It does get better, you'll loose less pots as you get better and it will get easier to handle the ones you do loose. It's not such a bad thing to loose a few pots when you can throw ten or so in an hour. Of course, there is the occasional bad firing when you loose a whole kiln load, that never stops hurting. Keep up the great work. Best, Kevin
