Firing Without A Kiln
Has anyone ever done the bonfire, grill, or anyother non-kiln method of firing?
If so could you go into detail about how you went about it. When you put the pot in (during lighting, once the fire was started etc) How long you kept the fire going. How you let the pot cool. Method for making the fire. (certain way to stack lumber, charcoal vs wood, logs vs kindling, etc) or any of ther advice in firing without a kiln. Also any websites with detailed information on this would be apreciated.

I fired at a pot with a shotgun - sometimes frustrations run high.

Hi Nathan,
This is someting I've always wanted to try. Here is a page with links to many articles on pit firing: http://www.claystation.com/technical/firing/pit.html From what I've read, it quite the lenghty process, but not to diffucult. I have a propane fired raku kiln that's made of a trash can lined with refractory fiber and fired with a weed burning torch. It only gets up to cone 05, but it does so very quickly and therefore only appropriate for clay that is designed to be resistant to thermal shock. Also, it's too fast to bisque fire in. Keep us post on your firing adventure and be safe! Best, Kevin

Thanks Kevin. I dont have time to look through that website but i book marked it and it looks to be very informative. Turns out a friend of mine's grandmother has a 20 year old kiln that has hardly been used and has sat for 20 years untouched. He is finding out for me if she would like to sell it. So maybe I wont have to fire my pots in such a primitive fashion after all.
