Drain holes???

I have a gorgeous stone water fountain that has cliff look to it and has two areas I can place bonsai in. One area (in inches) is 6 long*2 1/2 wide*4 1/2 deep. The other is 4 long*3 wide*3 deep. The problem is that the drain holes are'nt on the bottom, they're on the side. The first 1 is about 1 1/2 from the bottom and the second is 1/2 from the bottom.
I want to place an elm in the first one. The second is undecided. How big of a problem is this

P.S.--I'm a newbee, so thanks

Re: Drain holes???

I am confused. You want to plant trees in the drainage holes?

Re: Drain holes???

Sorry, I wasnt clear. The water fountain has 2 pits that are large enough for bonsai. Actually, they were made for this. The problem is that the drain holes inside of these pits are on the side not bottom as described above.
I hope this is a better description. I'll try to get a photo ASAP.

Re: Drain holes???

Matt may have some clever fixes but as is, it sounds like a real problem. I have a pot that is one of my favorites. I planted three different bonsai in it and they all died or got sick. I discovered that it had a big dip in the bottom so there was always standing water in it and that rotted the roots. I would guess the same thing will happen to you. Could you possible fill the area below the drain holes with expoxy? Would there still be enough of a hole for soil and plant? If that would work, you could bring the expxy up to just above the bottom of the drain hole and slope the expoxy slightly toward the drain hole so there wouldn't be no dead water in it.

Re: Drain holes???

It sounds like you would have to drill new drain holes in the bottom or fill it up with something to take up the excess space.

Re: Drain holes???

I,ll try to drill new holes so I don't lose space. But if I Fill them in I'll lose 1 3/4inches on the larger one and 3/4inch on the smaller one in depth.(Original Size is in the first post I'm guessing this would be ok since I have'nt even got a tree yet. I could just grow it to fit (I'm guessing). I'll have some pictures posted here later along with more questions. So, please check on me later>

Re: Drain holes???

Ok, here are some pics of the waterfountain that I am talking about above. I have to post them all seperately because I dont know how to group them. Some of the pics have a yellow lighter in them. This is to illustrate the size of the fountain. They also illustrate where on the fountain the bonsai will be planted & the view angle the picture was takken.
Questions follow the pics.
