I have also used other coluur inks to get a different colour crackle, blue looks pretty cool.

Thats what I know is common, to give that Raku look, . Have you "Weathered" any to see if that black lasts? I see many at art shows done this way, but they are "art pieces" and not for sitting outside.
I always wondered that about Horsts, although I think he second-fired his ala smokey raku which would hold the color FAIRLY good outside continually once re-fired at raku temps?
In the past I tried some crackles but unless pretty dark underneath they weren't very impressive. I'm affraid of losing it later if not fired on?

Dear Andy and Dale

Interesting to read about crackle.

I also colour with waterresistent ink , red also looks good !!!

But my crackle glaze is running like crazy ,

And also keep the white shining colour ?
Thank You

I have tried oxiding under the crackle but it changes the look of the entire glaze. I have thought of applying oxide after and then refiring to about 500 to stabilize, not sure if is worth the effor though. I use Indian Ink and ith weathers pretty well.

Is the glaze running? I will try and dig out a glaze recipe for you and send to you to see if that works.

Regards to you both

Andy

They sell a colored mineral oil or mineral spirits for tinting the crackle... once the clay body is stained, it probably won't wear or wash off. But then, I'm used to a porous earthenware body.
It would certainly be more likely to stay on than inks, which are water based. This stuff is tough, you have to scrub your hands or it stains them too.

Just generally, lessen the flux or increase alumina, test test test

RC,
Cant speak for Dale-- but when I have done a bit of this type of work, it is very easy to spray oxides over real leaves or stencils to get this effect.

Here's an older slab built rectangle with some flame colorations.
