cristal glaze

Dear all

Last time i was with a colleague he told me
i had to be carefull by using my cristal glaze.

It was out of the potters point of view ,
because the soil and additional bonsaifood could damage the glaze.

Very much i would like to ask if anyone has experience with this happening ?
The pots are high fired , the cristals all grown fully in the cooling proces.
I cant imagen why and in what way the glaze is still working ?

Here is a picture of my cristal glaze , the white/beige one ,
how i use it on bonsaipots.
Kind regards
Morea

Morea,
I'm not sure what you mean by cristal glazes........is it one you bought? The only crystal glazes I know of are low fire (cone 04) and you'd not want to use low fire for pots..... could you explain the glaze more?

Susan, I think that she's using the high fire porcelain glazes that actually "grow" crystals, see here... Crystalline glazes

Mmmmmmmmm pretty. And difficult to do.

*envious of such talent*

Morea, Perhaps your friend was telling you that the chemicals and dirt could get into the crazing that the glaze has? Or, maybe, over time the glazes could be worn down by exposure to chemicals and such. The only way to really tell would be to just use your pots and see how they do .

Dear Ladies
Susan , Joanie and Lindsay
Thank You so much for Your reply.

Excuse me to come so late with my reply.
In the meantime i did some research in my glazing books .

The cristal glazes i do are for high firing , cone 7 or 8 ~ 1240 C or
between 2246 F - 2282 F.
As You can see on the pictures it is the glaze with the small cristals.
Not yet the beautiful big ones Joanie linkt.
Those big ones make me always think of the Arabic tales of `1001 nights`!

I found an answer in the books !

The low fired cristal glazes are not resist against acid .
It will eat into the glaze and cristals.
Not only acid from pickels but also acid in tea .
So it better be not used inside a cup.

All temp. cristal glaze are not as hard as normal glaze .
It can be scratched or damaged when it is
exposed to mechanical forse !!!!
So was it really written in the book !!!

There are a few pots with my cristal glaze among bonsai/ists .
Also i have slab myself and will experience what it does .
Overall i am positive about still using my cristal glaze .
It looks good and is firm , more firm as raku glaze for sure .
Kind regards
Morea

Hi Morea,

I use a couple of glaze recipies that grow their own crystals, small ones as on your pots, I found them quite by chance and took a while and several experiments to discover the secret of this particular one.

I have been using these for over 2 years with no problem upto now, as you say they seem as hard and durable as any high fired glaze, I find it hard to believe they could be damaged by mechanical force as it said in your book, time will tell.

I see no problem in using these for bonsai, they may even change for the better over time, as most of my crackle glazes seem to, they develop a patina that makes them look older than they are, do you find this happens with some of your's?

Attached a couple of pics of "black marble" and "blue crystal", both are a little unpredictable,( the blue one didn't work so well on this pot,) but when they do work I really like them.

happy firing,
John.

I tried this when I made a few white porcelain pots.
and again on a light tan clay. It came out nicer on white, but I rarely make white porcelain pots.
These were cone 10 clays.
