In perusing bonsai pots, I see basically four shapes: round, oval, rectangular, and tulip.
Is there some unwritten rule restricting the "proper" shape of bonsai displays to these pot shapes? What if I wanted to do something entirely different, establishing a realistic (or fantastic) landscape? Would the bonsai be immediately dismissed for not being shown in the "correct" type pot? How variant can I go without incurring the displeasure of the bonsai judges? ![]() adTHANKSvance, Brian

Brian, You forgot slabs and crescents and ......etc. If your trying to impress a judge who can't see outside of the box and only recognizes the Japanese disipline, your in trouble. This is your tree(s) please and express yourself through your bonsai. I point to Nick Lenz who is probably the best US talent. He sure goes outside the box on some of his creations, like root over tank. If you haven't explored his work google him up for a treat.

There seem to be other shapes, but it's hard to work with triangles, or tetrahedons or something like that. The crescents seem to have the most variation, and the slabs can be pretty well any shape. There are older Chinese pots that have five sides, too.
Much variation come in the height of the pot, the length vs. the depth vs. the height, etc. Joanie |

If it'll fly
The rules of flight are specific only to a certain flying environment but always governed by an idea so well respected that it is law...gravity.
The rules of pot selection i.e. femine, curvy, deciduous, glazed or masculine, angular, evergreen, unglazed are specific to certain stylistic objectives but always governed by the quest for balance and harmony. You may be at a disadvantage with traditional judging with less than a traditional pot but you would never be disrespected with a harmonious composition. If you prefer to open new doors rather than pass through old ones do a search here for pots by Morea to explore the fantastic If it's a balanced work, it'll fly. |

You'll see a lot of those shapes because so many trees work well with them. The unusual shapes have to match the tree individually, which is a lot harder to match up.
Say I have an oval pot on the shelf and a guitar shaped (example) pot on my shelf. Come repotting time, the oval pot is going to get matched up a lot quicker with a tree.....and I'll buy another oval to replace it. If this happens a lot, I'll end up with 12 trees in oval pots before one in that guitar shaped pot. The danger with the "odd" pots is that the pot will over power the tree....not as likely to happen with a traditional shape...... |
