Question Zelkova

Photo 13.09.02 Have been growing this on (in a training pot), have done some basic pruning, no branches opposite of each other, what is the next stage to improve, or should I post a pic now, where it has no leaves?

Is your photograph recent ? Surely the leaves have dropped. I generally plan my major restructuring when the leaves have dropped, as then you can get a better idea of the branch structure. I have a few Zelkova that are kept in open ground for a few years with consideration to creating a broom style.

Get an idea of what you want, or send a photo without the leaves and I'm sure a number of people will come up with good ideas

The first thing I would do is to cut back the growth that it growing at such acute angles from the main branch structure. This growth looks like it from last season.
I think I would also go for cutting back the kink in the top third to the point where the upper left hand branch meets the kink. I would then wire this left hand branch as the new leader and grow as a formal upright

Hi Frank,
Yes you are quite right, all last season's growth, I haven't pruned it as wished to have advise first. Thank you very much for same. Kind regards
Kath.

Kath, this is nice looking material. Very promising. May I ask how long you have been working with it and how you first came by it? I'm working with a number of young trees (1-4 years old) and hope they look this good in a few years.

Hi Fred, Puchased this tree 5 years ago from a bonsai nursery, I was told then it was a sapling in 1993, so makes it approx. 10 years old. Kind regards Kath.

Kath, this is nice material. I'm wondering if this tree would look even better with a straight top. So I made a quick virt of your tree in an informal broom style with the crooked top cut off and the high branch bent up as the new apex.

I rather like the trunk as it is. It's not really either a formal or an informal upright but I think the trunk bends up top are tasteful. I wouldn't chop the top, but that's just me.

I try not to be too hasty to get my trees to match up with a classification.
