Yvonne Padilla demo in San Antonio

On Wednesday June first the San Antonio Bonsai Society, Inc. was indeed fortunate to have as our guest demonstrator Yvonne Padilla from the Corpus Christi club…Ms. Yvonne presented a wonderful demo on Japanese landscape bonsai ‘saikei’…

She began by sharing a bit of the history of ‘saikei’ a relatively new concept in bonsai, which was started following World War II due to the destruction of a mass amount of good bonsai material…By creating landscapes one could enjoy and display trees while they were in the process of growing and training…As trees developed into specimen trees they were removed from the ‘saikei’ and either replaced by other trees or a new landscape would be created…Not a bad idea for some of our small leafed trees in training and development…

Ms. Yvonne began with a very nice 22” x 16”x 1” cream glazed oval tray with screens covering the drainage holes, and placed the tufa rock [collected about 20 years ago on a trip to Mexico] into the tray on a muck base [first photo]…She explained the muck was made from Corpus Christi local clay mixed with chopped sphagnum moss, kept moist and stirred occasionally for several weeks, kneaded and placed in a zip-lock bag, and can be stored for many months…

The trees she chose for the ‘saikei’ were the Dwarf Australian Brush Cherry ‘Eugenia myrtifolia’, but she also discussed other species that are appropriate for ‘saikei’ plantings…Virtually any species with a small leaf, some suggestions were; juniper, boxwood [especially ‘kingsville’], barbados cherry, dwarf yaupon holly, texas ebony, fukien tea, serissa, singapore holly, and seiju, catlin, or hokkaido elm…Ms. Yvonne brought several extra trees and used more of a trial and error method of tree placement…She used a bit of the muck to help secure some of the trees in place and used a sifted mix of haydite and composted pine bark, with a small amount of un-sifted pine bark added to the mix [second photo]…

After all the trees were in place she added a few more pieces of tufa rock, and began adding the “accent plants” as she referred to them…[third photo shows the artist at work, even with muck and soil on those hands the nail polish is still visible]…Behind one of the stones she planted a Jungle Geranium ‘Ixora coccinea’ which she said produces a mass of lovely orange flowers in mid summer…She then added several clumps of Super dwarf mondo grass ‘Ophiopogon japonicus’ which has tiny lavender blooms, a few small patches of moss, and a rather significant patch of Elfin Thyme ‘Thymus praecox’ the smallest of all the thymes and also produces a pale lavender bloom…

Ms. Yvonne then finished filling and tamped the soil, a few final adjustments, [fourth photo] and sprayed the entire surface with water to which she added ‘superthrive’ and ‘LOC’ from ‘Amway’ to decrease water tension…The finished project [fifth photo] was then raffled off for $5.00 per ticket…I wish to apologize for the quality of the photos, I just haven’t quite got the hang of photographing in a room with florescent lights yet, but did manage to get a pretty nice detail shot showing the Elfin Thyme [sixth photo]…

A wonderful, educational, evening, and a great demo, thanks to Ms. Yvonne…

Regards
Behr

By the way I forgot to mention the best part of the entire evening…I only had $15 dollars cash with me so I purchased 3 raffle tickets…[I knew the tray alone was worth much more than that]…

This lovely ‘saikei’ [seventh photo] now resides in my bonsai garden, and I have the pleasure of caring for it…I will set up my photo area and try to get a photo with better lighting to post in the next few days…

Regards
A very fortunate Behr

Thanks to all for the nice comments...Aaron is correct I did do the drawing for the raffle, but since I had tickets in the drawing for the demo trees another member did the drawing for that one...Nut thanks for consciously or not bringing the spelling of saikei to my attention...seikei is a term from Viet Nam rather than Japan

Regards
Behr
